Birds Ireland is the website of: THE BIRDS OF IRELAND NEWS SERVICE. BirdsIreland is the only Bird Tour Guide company recommended by the official Irish Tourist Board, Bord Fáilte. The Birds of Ireland News Service (B.I.N.S.) was established August 1990. This was the first attempt to centralize all the news from around the country, and via a unique telephone service, to make this news available to all.

Here at last was an efficient information source that gave news 365 days a year, that could be accessed at any time, night or day. The Birds of Ireland News Service is the foremost source of rare bird news in Ireland.

Dublin Zoo

Established in 1830, this is the third-oldest zoo in the world (after those in London and Paris), nestled in the city’s largest playground, the Phoenix Park, about 3.2km (2 miles) west of the city center. In the past few years, the zoo has doubled in size to about 24 hectares (60 acres) and provides a naturally landscaped habitat for more than 235 species of wild animals and tropical birds. Come and see us.

Dublin Zoo opened in 1830. All the animals they had at that time, came from London Zoo. It was a big event at the time. and people rushed to catch a glimpse of wild and wonderful creatures they had only heard about but never seen.

Dublin Zoo hav an open day in 1838 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Coronation. On that day 20,000 people came. That record has not been beaten yet.. These days the role of the Zoo is very different. It’s about building a sustainable future for wildlife as their natural habitats shrink, and, in some cases, disappear altogether.

Irelands natural heritage is an integral part of our national inheritance and forms part of our sense of identity, providing resources of social, educational, recreational and aesthetic value. The National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS), part of the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government (DEHLG), manages the Irish State’s nature conservation responsibilities under National and European law. NPWS is charged with the conservation of a range of ecosystems and populations of flora and fauna in Ireland.

Nature: Ireland

Although green is its emblematic color, Ireland’s verdant fields are not the nation’s only extraordinary natural features. Sculpted millions of years ago by the advance and retreat of vast shields of ice, the Emerald Isle harbors a wealth of wildlife among its craggy mountains, fog-shrouded coastlines, steep gorges, and vast networks of inland waterways.

Irish Whale & Dolphin Group

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group is dedicated to the conservation and better understanding of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoise) in Irish waters. The Group was founded in 1990 to establish an Irish stranding and sighting scheme and to campaign for the declaration of Irish territorial waters as a whale and dolphin sanctuary. Just one year later in June 1991 the Irish Government declared all Irish waters to be a whale and dolphin sanctuary… the first of its kind in Europe. Our current focus is to promote better understanding of Irish cetaceans through education and research.

Irish Wildlife

This web site is a guide to my work. My image library may be of use to anyone in Multimedia/TV/Film looking for digital stills or DV footage of Irish wildlife. All the pictures on this website were captured from film taken on a mini-DV Canon XL-1 camera. I mainly focus on wildlife and related subject matter. Most of my work is done here in Ireland but I have also filmed abroad. I have a large library of still and moving images. For examples see the video grab jpgs in Gallery. None of these images have been altered in any way to ensure that they are a true reflection of the DV footage from which they are taken. (Jim Wilson – Irish Wildlife Image library)
